Lötschberg tunnel disaster, 100 years ago

The older of Switzerland's Lötschberg tunnels presented a classic case of an engineering geology disaster, which is surprisingly little known. The tunnel heading breached rockhead into a buried valley that had a depth greater than anything perceived as possible at that time. It demonstrates the need for engineers to understand the geological processes behind ground conditions.
