Thirty-seven samples of Upper Chalk from a borehole in the unsaturated zone near Manston in Kent were analysed for major elements and the mineralogy was determined. Porewaters were extracted and analysed for major cations and anions. Changes due to infiltrating water were not detected in the whole-rock analyses, but the porewater analyses generally show a decrease in concentration with increasing depth. The cause of the variations and the origin of the elements are discussed.
